My Story

Hi, my name is Pravar. I am 29 years old, and I welcome you all to BarneyLifts.

I believe it’s essential that you understand how I got into fitness and helping people change their lives for the better, one step at a time.

I wasn’t always like this. Let’s rewind to 2010, when, at the age of 14, I became morbidly obese, weighing a whopping 147 kilos. I was a typical adolescent kid who enjoyed playing video games, eating junk food, and binging on sugary treats. Being a fat teenager in public school wasn’t fun. Naturally, there was a lot of bullying and fat-shaming, even from my friends. I want to say it didn’t bother me, but at that age, we don’t have ‘thick skin.’ I found comfort in food, burying myself deeper into the vicious cycle of binge eating. I never really cared about how I looked, and I was all for ‘self-love’ and acceptance, but I didn’t know where to draw the line.

I remember when my friends started calling me Barney, after the popular children’s cartoon Barney the Purple Dinosaur. At first, I felt embarrassed, but I decided to own it for the sake of social acceptance. My parents were extremely worried about my health, especially since I didn’t have diabetes or thyroid issues. My weight gain was solely due to my lifestyle choices. As a last resort, my father scheduled bariatric surgery for me. I remained unaffected by the news, deciding that I had a few weeks to eat whatever I wanted and continuing to live in denial.

Around this time, I developed a crush on a girl and wanted to ask her out. I gathered the courage but got turned down instantly. For the first time, I felt the sting of rejection and got a harsh reality check. I looked in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. I had two choices: continue down the path of self-pity and binge-eating or take control of my life. I chose the latter, joined the gym, and lost around 4 kilos that month.

Seeing my determination, my parents put the surgery on hold and supported me. That same year, I lost 67 kilos in 10 months, something none of us could have imagined. After that change, there was no looking back. I learned new training modalities through trial and error, educating myself on muscle building, nutrition, and the pillars of physical fitness and health.

After graduating from college in 2016, I began training others. I decided to pursue a career in fitness, obtained certifications from the American Council on Exercise and the National Strength & Conditioning Association, and earned a second bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2018.

Fast forward to 2020, when the COVID pandemic hit. Lockdowns took a toll on everyone’s mental health, including mine. Despite having training equipment at home, I relapsed into old eating habits and gained 25 kilos, reaching 118 kilos. This made me realise the importance of mental health and its two-way relationship with physical health.

As the situation improved and lockdowns were lifted by the end of 2021, I decided to further my understanding of fitness and enrolled in an MBA in Sports Management in Spain. Moving to Barcelona in 2022, I found myself at a crossroads. After a few months of adjustment, I committed to getting back in shape and focusing on my studies and health. I shed 30 kilos in 12 months and maintained my weight at 88 kilos until I returned to India in 2024.

My journey has not been linear, and there have been relapses. However, honesty with oneself and long-term lifestyle changes are the keys to a healthy and happy life.

This is where BarneyLifts comes into the picture. I want to share the knowledge and experience I’ve accumulated over the years with each one of you. My goal is to help you realize that achieving your fitness goals and leading a healthy life doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t matter your age, gender, profession, or starting point. My job is to get you closer to your goals.

What matters is your willingness to change and your commitment to your goals. This is what BarneyLifts stands for, and I truly believe everyone is capable of change. All you have to do is look in the mirror, take control, and BEGIN your journey. One day at a time, without looking back!
